The run away instructors:
You have all heard of them. The great Martial Arts and Self Defense teachers and instructors with theyre great experience in reality.
*The best knife defense is to run!
*There is no knife defense only run!
*When you get in a knife attack the only thing that works is running!
Yes true, a knife attack is dangerous and fast. There is a severe chance of getting hurt.
Then they come with another comment. When its not really working to run away then you have to get the arm and lock the knife bla bla bla.
A knife is a close combat only weapon. You can do nothing with a knife standing two meters from a opponent. A knife can be drawn in a blink of an eye. To start running from a steady position, or to start running from sitting down will be no simple and no very fast task. Furthermore, most knife encounters happen in a close, a closed or confined spaces or places that are crowdy with people or furniture or other objects.
Tell me great experienced instructors? How can you:
*Run aways out of a elevator?
*Run from your own bedroom?
*Run from a metro or train cabine?
*Run out a very crowdy disco or bar?
*Run away and leaving your children or wife behind because they cannot run like you?
*Run with a knife injury already sustained?
*Run from your responsibility, if you are a security officer, a police agent or a personal protection guard?
*How can you even outrun your opponent who is full of hate and energy?
The answer is? You do and cannot. So your running advise and option is clear bullshit. Proberly because you do not have a better story to tell as an instructor and teacher.
But do not worry. If you do not understand my post, you will never will.

The use of the Combat Karate Helmet:
The Combat Karate / Kudo helmet with a fixed grill in front of the nose is a important part of our style. Since we use only light padded gloves for face striking and of course all kicks without protection. For safety reasons the helmet is used to control damage to the head, especially in training. In training you get hit much more then in competition, because you train more then you actually fight. Also in grappling and ground striking it keeps us safe, but it allows us to hit hard and real, so we can have a fair experience of the realistic training and eventually the real fight. Even through we use the helmet, the head Inside will get hit and can be damaged, but thats fighting.

Is your Martial Art or Combat sport a realistic Combatives style?
Many Martial Arts teachers think that their art or sport is real battle tested for nowadays society. They think that the Kata movements invented so many years and even ages ago meets the current status of real violence in civilian society and also in a war situation. Selling crap like defending yourself with a pen, a newspaper, a kobutan stick, a mobile phone, your jacket or even something stupid like loose change in your pocket. The conclusion of people who have no clue about real escalating violence or warfare. Teaching woman and kids crap, thinking they would stand a chance out on the streets with hardcore violent robbers and murders. Combatives is a training approach with dealing with situations and training scenarios. Specific practical movements that can be done fast and under pressure. Not choreographed stylish movements done against non moving and non resistant attackers.

Teaching to different persons:
After more than 25 years of fulltime teaching, there is really nothing new. Although behavior of people can chance. We at Ashigaru WKKO Honbu never changed our way, our policy or our interaction with people. We hardly adapted to what people think they want, need or think they need to get. WKKO Honbu is a very hard Dojo but also very very friendly if people behave friendly. Some of the Honbu students train over 20 years, and multiple days in the week. There are many reasons why people want to train in general: sports, history, defense, profesional or even medical reasons. The youngest students are 5 years old, and at this time the oldest student is 66 years of age and training 3 days in the week. We never ever wrote down a lesson or prepared a lesson in advance, although we teach around 17 classes a week. A teacher who needs to prepare a training in advance is no teacher. Yes, if you teach a kids group Jujutsu its different then a Police group above 18+, so the technical part will be a lot different, but still a good teacher can make the training when he sees and meets the group in front of him. Also sometimes you can feel what a group needs that day, or a student is asking a question and its nice to change the class to work on the answer. Unfortunately many teachers are very limited in skill, so they fill the classes with protocol and very little information, so they can keep the show last longer. In WKKO Honbu we are never limited, because everyone from white belt till 6 Dan, still trains, do all exercises and are all still fighting with each other to stay in shape and learn new ways to interact. In the end, we are all the same.

Full Contact:
Is Full Contact just doing your normal moves a little harder?
Many systems and styles are not made for Full Contact practice, training or fights. Think about Shotokan Karate, Pencak Silat, many Kungfu and Jujutsu styles and Taekwondo. They claim to be, but they are not. The way they stand, strike, kick or block is not the same. To be Full Contact, all your training aspects should be shaped for Full Contact. Thats why in Combat Karate we combine the thougest arts together as one. The Kyokushin power and spirit, Kickboxing elements and various systems of grappling. All executed from a solid based and approved fighting stance adjusted to the persons we have become today. Full Contact is not doing your semi contact punch a little harder, or your strange Kungfu claw and strange kick in a socalled real way. Full Contact is not doing your Kata movements in a socalled real application thinking they were made for Combat, while they were made for balance, repetition, movement training and coordination. Full Contact is a complete approach of your art in training for real, from real teachers.

Competition:
Competition is a good part of our Art, but certainly not the biggest or most important part. So many teachers and Dojo's have nothing really to give, teach or instruct if they are not doing competitions. They need competition to establish their credibility and ego. Without it they have nothing to offer or to show. The kids, junior and senior fighters from the WKKO Honbu in the Netherlands have fought in many systems like: Kyokushin Karate, Jujutsu, Pka Kickboxing, K1 Kickboxing, Shidokan Karate, Sanda, Mma, Tanto Jutsu, Boxing and Combat Karate in countries like the Netherlands, Sweden, Japan , Belgium, Montenegro, Hungary, France, Great Britain, Poland and more. They have won more then 500 awards and prizes. But that was never the greatest achievement in our Budo journey. Its the personal development of each and everyone of our students and members.
